DETROIT - Western International senior point guard, Brailen Neely, added his name to a pretty impressive list, that includes city legends such as Robert Traylor, Winfred Walton, Dion Harris, and Manny Harris, when he won the 2016 Detroit Public School League Mr. PSL award last night. It came down to a three-man race in the city for prestigious award, with Neely beating out East English Village Prep's Karmari Newman, and Henry Ford's James Towns.

"Of course, it's big," Neely said on being named this year's Mr. PSL. "You have all these great players in the city, so, I'm thankful.

"Horatio (Williams) told me and my dad last night that I had won it. Not trying to sound big-headed, but it didn't mean that much to me. We weren't in this game (city title game), so, it's a great honor, but I would have liked to have gotten something bigger."

Neely and his Western team were knocked out of the PSL playoffs in the semifinals by Northwestern, on a buzzer-beating tip-in. His career in the PSL did not end like he had planned on it, but the 5-9 guard, who is committed to play at Oakland University this fall, will go down as one of the more accomplished guards in the city. He made the PSL All-City 1st team again, won a city title last season, completed a 26-0 perfect season last year en route to a Class A state title, and set a PSL record for most consecutive wins, with 31.

Neely's career at Western did not start off as smooth as it ended, only winning a handful of games in his first two years. But this Mr. PSL award is just icing on the cake for what has been a long journey for him.

"Coming into high school I didn't think I could Mr. PSL," Neely said. "But junior year I figured I could, so I said why not."
