Top 10 Detroit King football players over the last 15 years
Who has been the most consistent Detroit Public School League Program over the last 30 years or so? That would be Detroit Martin Luther King. The last 15 years have also been good to the Crusaders, with a 122-42 record, winning a number of city titles and capturing the league's first state title in 2007, going 14-0. You don't have the success that King has had without having some type of talent, and they've had plenty of it.

High school All-Americans, college All-Americans, and even a couple of pros. So has been the best player to strap on the all black helmet with the gold facemask? I take a look at the top 10 players who have played at King over the last 15 seasons.
1.Class of 2008 DE-LB Nick Perry: People like to put an asterisk next to his accomplishments at King, because he played one, year. But his whopping 36 sacks as senior is still a state record. He helped King win state a title in 2007, then starred at USC in college. He currently plays with the Green Bay Packers, where he was drafted in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
2.Class of 2001 DB Ernest Shazor: Oversized defensive backs are the trend nowadays, and Shazor was just that during his time. Standing nearly 6-4, 210-pounds at safety, Shazor was super athletic, and could hit and run for a man of his size. He was a high school All-American, and went on to be a college All-American at Michigan. He surprisingly went undrafted out of college, but did play with the Arizona Cardinals for a stint.
3.Class of 2012 RB Dennis Norfleet: We can only ponder what he could have been in college, currently playing a kick-punt returner role at Michigan, but in high school, "Fleet" was a magician with cleats on. Only about 5-7, 170-pounds, he has the total package, with speed, elusiveness, and playmaking ability. He rushed for 2,033 yards as a senior in 2102, along with 29 touchdowns.
4.Class of 2001 DL Kevin Vickerson: At 6-5, and almost 300-pounds in high school, "Big Vick" was a machine at King. His 97 tackles and 17 sacks as senior in 2000, is amazing at his position and size, and helped King go 10-1 that year. Vickerson went on to play all four years at Michigan State, then was drafted in the 7th round of the 2005 NFL Draft. He currently plays for the New York Jets.
5.Class of 2008 RB Darrin Williams: Before Dennis Norfleet, there was Darrin "D-Dogg" Williams at King. Williams was small in stature too at 5-7, 156-pounds, but was unstoppable with the ball in his hands. He rushed for 2,837 yards as senior, willing King to its only state title win in 2007. For his career, he has 5,655 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns, to go along with over 7,000 all-purpose yards. Williams signed with Cincinnati in 2008, and finished his career at Albion.
6..Class of 2014 ATH Avonte Maddox: It's a shame Maddox didn't play all four years, because he would have been higher on the list. But his two years on varsity football were special, on offense, defense, and specials teams. He was dynamic on all three phases as a senior, catching 35 passes for 956 yards and 14 touchdowns, rushed for 717 yards, and intercepting four passes. There wasn't much he couldn't do. Maddox was an all-state Dream Team member, and now contributes to Pittsburgh's football team on defense.
7.Class of 2002 DL Larry Harrison: A four-star recruit coming out of King, Harrison was man amongst boys at 6-3, 290-pounds, and a highly sough after recruit in 2002. After dominating at King, Harrison went on to play at Michigan, where he was kicked off the team, and transferred to North Carolina A&T.
8.Class of 2004 LB Wendell Brown: Talk about physically impressive players, Brown is in that category, and had the game to match. He won a city title in both his junior and senior years, recording a whopping 172 tackles, and six sacks as a senior in 2003, and 392 for his career. He made all-state as a senior as well, and went on to play at Ball State.
9.Class of 2003 DB Samad Cain: Cain was a key component on King's 9-1 team in 2002 that won the city title, and was the No.1 team in the state. Cain was an all-state selection in 2002, racking up 82 tackles from his safety position, and picked off a impressive eight passes in ten games. The 6-2, 185-pounder played at Minnesota in college.
10.Class 0f 2006 LB Jarrell Herring: A four-year starter at King, Herring was a tackling machine, finishing his career with 620 tackles for his career, with 12 forced fumbles, and 23 sacks. He also won two city titles at King, before moving on to Grand Rapids CC for two seasons, before ending his career at North Caroline A&T.
