DETROIT - The Detroit Police Athletic League has been playing football in the city for decades. And in the time, no team had ever won four straight A-team titles. That was until the Detroit Spartans took down the West Seven Rams for a fourth straight year, 28-12, at Ford Field to make history.
"I'm a firm believer that in Detroit P.A.L., you're a product of your environment," said Spartans head coach and CEO Dedrick Griffin. "I am a product of P.A.L. I played when I was 7-years-old. So to be a part of something that had never been done, I'm just thankful for the kids."
The four straight championships might not even be the Spartans' most impressive accomplishment. Since the organization was formed in 2014, the team has not lost at the A-team level. The win over the Rams pushed their record to 44-0, which is hard to do an any level of football.
"It's even harder when you get 26 new kids in your program," Griffin said. "I had three returning starters from last year, so to have 26 kids buy into this program, I'm speechless for it. When you get kids from different teams, you never know how they'll actually be once you get them into the program. They were team players, they adapted to the system, and they believed in what we taught them from day one."
The Rams struck first in the game, taking a fumble the length of the field for a touchdown. After that, the Spartans ran off 28 straight points to capture another league title. To beat one of the more prominent little league teams in the city four times in a row for the championship is another accomplishment the Spartans can be proud of.
"Just to be able to constantly play a team in the championship game, and to compete is all I can ask for," Griffin said. "We prepared, we went over our game plan, and the guys came out and executed the plan. They've been tested all year. They seized the day, and good things happened for them."
