Overview: Macomb Dakota comes into the 2009 season with a bitter taste in their mouth. The Cougars were upset at home by arch-rival Sterling Heights Stevenson at home in the District Final 31-28 after beating the Titans 10-0 in the regular season.

"It was a terrible feeling losing to Stevenson to end the season," said senior Tyler Robichaud. "The coaches put the film on all summer during weight lifting, conditioning and 7-on-7."
Dakota, who finished last season 9-2, will enter 2009 with more question marks than usual. The Cougars play in one of the best divisions in the state (MAC Red). Many teams will be looking to get the shots in on Dakota after being beaten down by Dakota for many years.
Key Departures: Gone is All-State OT Jeff Fantuzzi (Central Michigan), TE Dan Miller, DT Mike Laamanen, S Dan Meurer and QB Mike Romanchik. This class was one of the most successful in school history. How will the Cougars replace the void left by these players?
Key Returners: While Dakota lost a lot of talent due to graduation, they will return 16 starters; 9 on offense and 7 on defense. Seniors Ryan Spicuzzi, Trevor Wiitenen, Joshua Wixson, Greg Martin, Bryce Watts and Tyler Robichaud have big game experience and will be counted on to continue the strong tradition left behind by last year's class. Junior QB Mark Morris will be the full time starter this season after splitting time last year.
Key Newcomers: Junior Bernard Taylor, a transfer from Detroit King, will be given every opportunity to fill the shoes of Jeff Fantuzzi. Junior DeAndre Smith will become the starting Safety. Teammates say senior WR Joe Campbell has the chance to become a breakout player for the Cougars in 2009.
Key Game: Week 5 @ Sterling Heights Stevenson. Dakota has had this date circled since their schedule came out. Aside from being bitter rivals, this game always has a huge impact on the outcome of the MAC Red.
Prediction: The game experience Mark Morris got last year should really benefit him and the team this season. He will be expected to lead the Dakota Offense and be the playmaker Head Coach Mike Gianonne believes he is. While Dakota is eager to erase the memories from last season's disappointing finish, they will travel to division favorite Stevenson this year after hosting them twice in 2008. I expect Dakota to be in a heated race with Romeo for 2nd Place in the MAC Red.
