DETROIT - When the Detroit Public School League Big "D" boys varsity basketball tournament was released on Saturday, Pershing was initially supposed to play Osborn. Due to some mistakes in the bracketing of the teams, a new bracket was released on Sunday morning, which had Pershing heading west to play Renaissance in one of four PSL play-in games. The Doughboys held off the Phoenix in the finals seconds, 56-52, to advance to the first round of the playoffs.

Senior guard Patrick Hatcher led all scorers with 21 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Dejuan Seals chipped in 12 points.

Renaissance was down by more than 15 in the second half, but sophomore Chandler Turner willed them back to cut the lead to two with under a minute to go. The Phoenix had an opportunity to tie the game on a dunk by Carrington McCaskill, but he missed the dunk, and was called for basket interference. Hatcher hit free throws on the other end to seal the game. Turner had 20 points and seven rebounds. McCaskill stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks.
