Looking for something to do around Detroit this Martin Luther King Day weekend? The Horatio Williams Foundation MLK Freedom Classic is back at Warren Fitzgerald High School on Saturday, with another loaded line up of games and star players. The action tips off at noon, and tickets are $10. Children under five are free.
Detroit Northwestern vs. Ann Arbor Skyline at noon:
This game will be loaded with some of the state's best guards. Northwestern has sharp-shooting lefty senior Kylan Shipp and high-flying freshman Steve Pearson. Have your camera ready when he as the ball in the open floor. Skyline counters with 3-point specialist Jack Ammerman, and brother duo, Brandon and Ryan Wade.
Detroit Edison vs. Detroit Cornerstone at 1:45 p.m.
Edison should be at full strength this game, adding transfers Gary Solomon, Amari Hudson, and Central Michigan point guard commit Pierre Mitchell to an already talented team. The top player in the state plays for Cornerstone, in 6-7 Marquette commit Jamal Cain, who runs with his cousin Davion Bradford, one of the more athletic kids in the state.
Detroit Henry Ford vs. Ann Arbor Huron at 3:30 p.m.
Two of the more tougher teams will go at it in this one, between Henry Ford and Huron. Senior guard Devontaye Webb and shooter Deonate Ulmer. Huron's size is their strength, with seven players 6-4 or over, including Emory College commits Lawrence Rowley and Alec Anderson.
Detroit Pershing vs. Warren De La Salle at 5 p.m.
Guards have always been the strength of Pershing's program and this season is no different, with Ron Hill, Patrick Hatcher, and Dejuan Seals leading the way. De La Salle is always mentally sound and tough, with junior big-man Luke Pfromm anchoring the paint.
Detroit Western vs. Clarkston at 6:30 p.m.
Western is still trying to find its way as a young team, but they are still very talented with 6-7 junior Tray Jackson, and Anthony Roberts, and freshman Lorne Bowman running the team. Clarkston is one of the best teams in the nation, with Michigan State point guard commit Foster Loyer, Milwaukee commit Dylan Alderson, and 6-9 Taylor Currie.
Flint Beecher vs. Macomb Dakota at 8:30 p.m.
It will be guards versus big-men in the night-cap. Malik Ellison is one of the top overall players in Michigan, and he Jordan Roland, and Jalen Terry form a deadly trio. Dakota has two of the better big-men in the state with Michigan State-bound Thomas Kithier and 6-9 Jack Ballantyne. Jermaine Jackson Jr., might be the top point guard in the state.
