CANTON, Mich.- It looked like Canton was going to be dealt their first loss of the season Thursday night.

Senior forward Logan Ryan had something different in mind. He hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Canton went on to defeat Walled Lake Western 50-47 and win the KLAA Championship.

“To see him hit that three is really not that surprising,” Canton head coach Jimmy Reddy said. “He did that earlier in the year against Churchill.”

The game was close all night long. Neither team could build a huge lead. The biggest lead of the game was when Western went up 6-0 early in the first quarter. The score was tied at halftime then Canton held a slight lead 36-33 heading into the fourth.

Western then went on a 14-8 run in the fourth before Ryan hit his game-tying three. On the next possession Ryan blocked a lay-up from Western guard Delano Smith to make sure the game went to overtime.

“It was a great contest by Logan (Ryan),” Reddy added. “He (Smith) probably would of made that shot if it wasn’t for Logan.”

Canton finishes regular season play with a 20-0 record heading into the district tournament.

“We haven’t talked bout the record, we are trying to play the right way,” Reddy said. “Pressure is just an opportunity to do something great and that’s what this group is trying to do.”

Canton senior guard Hamoudy Turfe led the team in scoring with 16 points, Ryan added 10 points with two big blocks and senior guard Obiajulu Okoli also added 10 points.

Western battled tough all night but were not able to come out on top. They were unable to hit free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Western led 46-43 with 25.4 left after junior guard Delano Smith split a pair at the line. Smith had a chance to win the game but he had his shot rejected in the final seconds by Ryan.

Smith finished the game with 21 points and 5 rebounds, junior guard Cody White had 16 points and senior center Donovan Williams added 10 points and 9 rebounds.

A crucial moment in the game was when Williams fouled out with 2:10 left. That sent the 6’6 center to the bench for the remainder of the game.

Canton (20-0) will now wait for the winner of Monday night’s game between Plymouth (8-11) and Northville (18-1). Canton will play the winner of that game Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Salem high school.

Walled Lake Western (15-5) will play crosstown rival Walled Lake Central (16-3) Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. That game will take place at Central.
