December basketball doesn't get much more exciting than what went down Tuesday night in Southfield. The home team withstood an improbable comeback and prevailed in overtime, 61-60.
Ferndale, which is playing without star guard Stane's Bufford who is ineligible, looked like a lost cause with two minutes left in the game. But with under a minute left their 6'4" junior Pierre Ellis hit a three from the top of the key two get the Eagles within two. The best was yet to come.

Last March, in the Dearborn Fordson regional final between Detroit Redford and Mackenzie, the Stags' Calvin Wooten hit a shot I'd never seen before -- an up-and-under runner from the baseline for three. Reverse sides of the floor from left to right and that's exactly what 6'2" Ferndale junior Byron Hensley did to tie the game 51-51 at the regulation buzzer.
The OT was back and forth, with Ferndale ultimately missing another three-point buzzer beater.
The best player on the floor was Dejuan Warren, Southfield's 6'3" junior point guard. He's a smart passer who can go either way with the ball. Big enough to rebound and do some things inside. Not flashy, but just the right guy to run Ben Kelso's team. Warren will be one of the state's most recruited quarterbacks next season.
6'6" Ferndale senior and Kent State signee Cliff Brown had his moments. The Bluejays collapsed on him whenever he tried to work inside so Cliff floated out for some three-pointers. But he did have one great dunk and came up big down the stretch.
Southfield's Jay Youngblood is a good baseline scorer who plays an active game and draws a lot of fouls. Good player, but a forward all the way at maybe 6'4".
Hensley is all kinds of athlete, like a raw Curtis Gilmore or Byron Davis. His game's a little wild, though. But if not for that reckless streak, would the game have even gone into OT?
