Campbell De-commits

In one of the most dramatic story lines of the off-season, Detroit Cass Tech junior quarterback Jayru Campbell now claims that he has de-committed from Michigan State and said that he has officially re-opened his recruiting process.

Campbell made this announcement on Monday. He also indicated that MSU was no longer on his list, and that he has received scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Miami (Fla.) and Louisiana State.

So far, Michigan State has not made any statement about whether his scholarship offer was pulled or if Campbell saw the writing on the wall and pulled out.

After agreeing to a plea deal on a misdemeanor assault charge, Campbell was sentenced to 60 days in jail. Campbell was charged with two counts of assault of a security guard on Jan. 22 inside Cass Tech where videos of the incident clearly showed Campbell body-slamming the security guard. The video went viral and made it next to impossible for Campbell to escape sentencing.

The 6-foot-4, 200 lb QB prospect led Cass Tech to the Division 1 football championships as a freshman and sophomore, but last season, Cass Tech lost to Detroit Catholic Central in the Division 1 semifinals where another video showed Campbell punching a DCC player after the game. The same video showed his coach wrestling him to the ground, pinning him down and trying to talk some sense into the young man.

Campbell is expected to begin summer school classes next Monday, and his jail sentence is scheduled to begin July 30. If he serves the full 60-day sentence, he will not be able to participate in pre-season football camp or play in the first half of the season.

There is currently no word from the MHSAA regarding his eligibility and it will be interesting to see how Cass Tech handles the situation once Campbell finishes his sentence.
