Muma is a Spartan
Over the last few weeks SpartanMag.com has profiled kicker Kevin Muma of Troy High School several times. The strong legged Muma is the top kicker in Michigan for the class of 2009 and fills an important need for Michigan State.
This past weekend Muma took and official visit to the University of Kansas and upon returning decided to make his selection. SpartanMag.co spoke with Muma about the visit and his decision.
"I went to Kansas with my mom, dad and sister," he said. "It was really nice. I had a great time. Coach Mangino is a great coach and I was really impressed with Lawrence. However, when I got home I sat down with my parents and talked about things and decided that Michigan State was where I would go."
Muma then called up the Spartans and gave them the good news.
"I called up Coach Enos and he had Coach Dantonio give me a call. He was very excited that I decided to become a Spartan. I will take my official visit there this weekend right after my basketball game on Friday night."
So what was it that tipped the scales in favor of the Spartans after an impressive visit to Kansas?
"I really enjoyed visiting Kansas, but I just felt that Michigan State was the best fit for me," Muma said "I know a lot of people up there and I think that will help the transition, plus it is nice that my family and friends will be able to come and watch me play."
Muma talked about the role his parents had on his decision.
"They were great; they let me make my own decision. They provided a lot of good advice, but let me make the decision on my own. My mom was really happy that I was going to State, so was the rest of my family too."
With Brett Swenson set to be a senior, Muma will have the opportunity to replace him and be the kicker for 3 or 4 years depending on if he red-shirts or not. Muma will compete for kickoff duties this fall and that is the reason why he may not redshirt.
Muma is known for having a strong leg, this past fall he connected on 12 of 19 field goals, including a school record 52-yarder. He put close to 80% of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks and was 32 of 35 on extra-points.
SpartanMag.com will have more from Muma following his official visit. Muma becomes the 20th commitment to the Spartan class of 2009.
