November 24, 2012The highly anticipated re-match between Detroit Catholic Central and Detroit Cass Tech in the Division 1 title game ended with about the same result as last year - an overwhelming Cass Tech victory. Sophomore QB Jeyru Campbell was sensational again, hooking up with senior Jourdan Lewis for an 89-yard TD on their very first play of the game.
On the next DCC possession, a botched hand-off turned into a fumble that Cass Tech DL Kenton Gibbs picked up and rambled 58 yards for another TD that put Cass Tech up 12-0 less than five minutes into the game. At that point, it looked like it was going to be a blow-out, but CC hunkered down and slowly crept back into the game.
As the Shamrock defense started getting crucial stops, CC senior QB Garrett Moores picked up his play. He hit senior Anthony Darkangelo with a great pass, before hooking up with junior Zach Bock for a TD with just 2:02 left in the half.
Cass Tech kicked a field goal with 45 seconds left in the half and the teams went into the intermission with the game at 15-7.
Early in the second half, Cass started running the ball well, and junior Deon Drake ran one in from 30 yards out to put them up 22-7. When Jeyru Campbell ran another one in midway through the 4th quarter, their 29-7 lead seemed impossible to overcome. But, two minutes later, Moores hooked up with Bock again to bring the game to 29-13. The TD breathed some life into the CC sideline, and their defense held tight.
As the game started to wind down, Moores was forced to throw more than he probably wanted, and got picked off. Delano Hill grabbed the interception and ran it back 84 yards to give Cass a 36-13 lead. CC ran a trick play that resulted in another TD, but it was too little too late, and Cass Tech became the first back-to-back State Champions to ever come out of the Detroit Public School League.
After the game, Cass Tech coach Thomas Wilcher said "The results you get, always come from the hard work you put in. Our kids have worked really hard to make this happen, and we're really proud of them today. The kids earned this one."
