November 24, 2012After Ithaca's stud junior QB Tyler Smith went down with a separated shoulder in the first quarter, coach's nephew Logan Hessbrook stepped in and lead his team to a third-straight championship. Hessbrook played exceptionally well, using both his legs and arm to beat Constantine.
Ithaca came into this game on a 41 game winning streak lead by junior QB Travis Smith. But that was not the case this game as Smith got injured on Ithaca's 2nd play from scrimmage a 4 yard run by Smith where he got hit hard by Tommy Reed of Constantine. It looked to be a right shoulder/collarbone injury. He would not return to the game and just was left to cheer from the sideline in a sling.
He was replaced by fellow junior Logan Hessbrook who is the head coaches nephew who normally plays WR/DB. But today he was backup quarterback and his play was impressive as he was 7 of 13 for 104 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed the ball 23 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
"I put him in there and I trusted him and he played his heart out there for us. Early on we did some things and I talked to him on the sideline. And I said listen bud Travis isn't coming back and were going to live and die with you so just go out there and play the way your capable of playing and he was able to do that for us," said coach Terry Hessbrook.
The games scoring started with Constantine's QB Tommy Reed rushing for a 3rd touchdown followed by a 48 yard run by Logan. Reed finished the game 5 of 12 for 87yards with 11 carries for 51 yards rushing with one touchdown. But after one quarter Constantine lead 14-7. The 2nd quarter flipped as Logan threw his two touchdown passes .While Constantine second best runner on the day Sophomore Logan Hull scored on a 52 yard touchdown run. He rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries. At halftime the score was even 20-20 making for a intriguing 2nd half.
The 3rd quarter started out strong for yellowjackets with an opening drive getting into the Falcons territory. But that is where the Falcons defense held strong forcing the yellowjackets to run out the ball over on downs. But then Constantine turned it over on downs and that was when Ithaca took over scoring a touchdown, field goal, and touchdown on three consecutive drives. Making it 37-20 Ithaca with 6:30 to go in the game.
Constantine would add a TD by top rusher Ben Mallo who ran for 208 yards and touchdown on 16 carries. As a team Constantine ran for 417 yards on 47 carries with four rushing touchdowns by four different players. But it was a little too late for Constantine. As Ithaca held on for the win 37-27.
Constantine 59 plays for 504 yards, with 417 rushing and 87 passing with only one turnover and 22:47 minutes for time of possession. While Ithaca had 58 plays for 314 yards, with 200 rushing and 114 passing yards with only one turnover and 25:13 minutes for time of possession. The big stat is punting as Constantine had two punts for an average of 15.5 yards per kick. While Ithaca had two punts for an average of 37 yards per kick. Which ultimately determined the game as Ithaca started with better field possession resulting in more scores.
