All year long senior quarterback Devin Gardner has been tabbed as the star of the Inkster Vikings. However tonight it was Gardner and senior return man/running back Terrance Stevens who shone brightly in the Vikings 51-19 victory over the Dearborn Edsel Ford Thunderbirds. "Stevens is one of our fastest kids we have on the team," said Viking head coach Greg Carter. "But he doesn't have much varsity experience because he's had some injuries the past years that have kept him out." The Thunderbirds started the game with the ball and got the scoring started first. They marched off an 11 play scoring drive capped off by senior running back Kevin King. King who had 8 carries on the drive had finally punched it into the end zone from 2-yards out. The Vikings wasted no time responding to the Thunderbirds touchdown as Devin Gardner would eventually find senior wide receiver Deon Butler in the end zone for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Gardner attempted to find Butler again on the two point conversion but had his pass batted down, making it 7-6 Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds inserted junior quarterback Hassan Ayoub for their next drive and the Vikings were quick to force their first of 3 turnovers. Ayoub was rolling out to make a pass when the Vikings pressure caused Ayoub to lose control of the ball as he tucked it down. The fumble was recovered by the Vikings' Nathan Lindsey at their own 45 yard line. Gardner and the Vikings were quick to capitalize off the Thunderbirds mistake as 6 plays later Gardner once again hooked up with Butler for a 15 yard touchdown pass. Gardner would then run the two point conversion in on a draw giving the Vikings a 14-7 lead. The Thunderbirds once again came out and scored on yet another methodical 15 play drive which was capped off once more by King. King ran in the touchdown in from 6 yards out with 1:11 left in the first half. A bad snap cost the Thunderbirds their chance to tie, making the score 14-13 Vikings. The ensuing kickoff was taken back 92 yards for the touchdown by senior return man Terrance Stevens for the Vikings. A two point conversion would make the score 22-13 as the teams headed into halftime. But halftime couldn't cool off Stevens who returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a 79 yard touchdown. Another two point conversion and the Vikings had a commanding 30-13 lead. "Those were my first two kick returns for touchdowns this year," said Stevens. "I really owe a lot to the guys who were up front blocking and opened up huge holes for me. They allowed that to be real easy for me." The Thunderbirds answered quickly with a third touchdown on the day from senior running back Kevin King making it 30-19 Vikings. But Devin Gardner refused to let his teammate steal the spot light as he would score on the first play of the next drive. A 68 yard touchdown on a quarterback draw in which Gardner was never touched and another two point conversion would put the game out of reach. The Vikings were led offensively by senior quarterback Devin Gardner who was 4 for 7 passing with 44 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gardner also ran the ball 6 times totaling 96 yards and 2 touchdowns, he also ran in 3 two point conversions while throwing another one. Senior wide receiver Deon Butler caught 2 passes for 24 yards with 2 touchdowns and also caught a two point conversion. And senior return man Terrance Stevens had 2 kickoff returns for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. "This was not revenge for us even though they wouldn't let us in their conference," said Devin Gardner. "But it did feel good to beat them, they were talkin junk to me on my Facebook. I don't really care about personal stats too much I just care about getting that W." The Thunderbirds were led offensively by senior running back Kevin King. King ran the ball 40 times on the night while racking up 246 yards on the ground and 3 touchdowns. King also led the Thunderbirds on defense while chipping in with 6 tackles. "Obviously they ran the ball well tonight," said Vikings Coach Carter. "They were one of the better running teams we've faced. We knew they'd be physical so our goal was to stay in front of runners and not give up big plays." The Inkster Vikings (6-3) will move on to next week to face the winner of the game tomorrow between Redford Thurston (7-2) and Detroit Martin Luther King (7-2). The Dearborn Edsel Ford Thunderbirds end their season at 8-2.
